f.m.i.m.v.5 song #1 = “deck the halls”

Every Monday I will be posting a little write-up about the song released that week from festive.mood.inducing.music.vol.5

This week, song #1 = “Deck the Halls”

I’ll be honest, this is not my favorite Christmas song ever. Actually, it’s probably near the bottom of the list.

However, for whatever reason, I really wanted to record this song.  (..It sure wasn’t the poll results, because this song came in dead-last. Sorry! Sometimes I just do what I want.)

I was shooting for a way to make the song less annoying. I wanted to make it more mellow, less joyful (yeah, i went there), and mess with the melody a bit.

I started the process by scouring my recording software (Logic Pro 9) for the perfect drum loop. I love the one I ended up with (it’s used in the final recording). I basically built the whole song arrangement off that loop. I’m not a huge proponent of drum loops, but they have a time and a place and this just felt right-ish.

On the electric guitar part, I ended up using a partial capo and I think it gave me some really cool tones and unique chord voicings. This song arrangement came to me really fast (which is rare) and I was pleased with how it turned out.

I like to think the production was moderately inspired by one of my favorite musicians, David Bazan.
I used a subtle slap-back delay on the vocal (like he often does), and I think the guitar playing is in a similar vein. However, I don’t think he’d care too much for my poppy breakdown bridge section.

Well, that’s probably enough of me self-importantly blabbering about this song…

What do you think of the song? Be honest! Do you have any questions or thoughts?
