Every Monday I will be posting a little write-up about the song released that week from festive.mood.inducing.music.vol.5
This week, song #2 = “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing”
I guess I have a thing for Christmas songs about Angels, or perhaps there’s just a lot of songs about Angels? Either way – I was happy to add this gem to this year’s Christmas EP.
When I’m working through potential song ideas every year, I probably play through at least 10-15 songs before I settle on which ones to record. Sometimes, arranging the song can be a major pain and take me many different sessions to figure out a direction. Luckily, “Hark!” was an immediate connection for me.
Right off the bat, I sang the melody in that alternating line manner, and I tuned my guitar down a whole step to get a little meatier sound. I also used my roommate’s old Martin acoustic which had super dead strings; I thought it seemed appropriate. Then my buddy Ben came in and really set the tone with that percussion beat (which may, or may not be slightly ripped off an Beyonce song – whoops!)
My housemate Kyle added a few different stellar electric guitar tracks, almost taking the song in the country territory with his solo in the bridge (sorry, but I’m not sorry). Finally, my dad’s piano playing and sister’s background vocals really filled out the remaining holes.
This was a fun track to put together and I’m happy with it how it turned out. Just wait for next week though, things are about to get weird.
